Only this group of people will get their june R350 SRD grant.
WHO MIGHT BE EXCLUDED FROM APPLICATIONS FOR THE R350 GRANT?
The agency is expected to issue a major new caution. According to them. Anyone receiving financial assistance from their family in excess of R350 per month, would be removed from the next round of applications.
On Friday, the Department of Social Development briefed MPs on their intentions. They want to ‘reduce down’ on the number of people who get the R350 award, citing fiscal difficulties and widespread fraud as reasons.
EACH MEANS TEST HAS LIMITATIONS.
However, enforcing this new means test might be problematic. Monitoring how money is exchanged inside the family unit would be a major roadblock, and there would be nothing prohibiting relatives from providing their dependents R349 a month.
Before such a policy can be implemented, there are a number of wrinkles to iron out, as with every new plan. What is apparent, however, is that SASSA now wishes to tighten its financial strings, as Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu has stated.
THE LATEST FROM SASSA: THE R350 GRANT WILL ‘GO TO FEWER PEOPLE’
Zulu stated in a written testimony to Parliament that her agency ‘has an obligation to safeguard SASSA money,’ arguing that the crackdown will assist direct state handouts to ‘people they’re intended for.’
“The responsibility to maintain these monies, as well as portions of the legislation, has to be enhanced in terms of fraud prevention and ensuring that they reach the designated recipients.” As a result, the department will provide the R350 grant to [fewer] persons this time.” Zulu, Lindiwe
The R350 grant will last until March 2023 at the earliest.
